Who we are

The Community Energy team within Transition Toronto is a volunteer-led initiative focused on decarbonizing heating systems in Toronto’s neighborhoods by supporting the implementation of district energy systems (DES). These centralized, low-carbon thermal networks offer a scalable and cost-effective alternative to upgrading homes individually. With residential buildings contributing 54% of the city’s building-sector GHG emissions and space heating comprising over 60% of household energy use, retrofitting neighborhoods with DES can significantly advance Toronto’s net-zero by 2040 target. Through research, advocacy, and data-driven feasibility assessments, the team works with local communities and neighborhood associations to promote energy equity, lower emissions, and long-term resilience. Volunteers and interested organizations are encouraged to get involved.
